Most of what I have learnt has been from listening to my own body. Im a holistic dermal therapist, aroma therapist, herbalist and now permaculture enthusiast in training.
ALL of my studies have been peaked by my interest in intolerances. Since a child I have had eczema, psoriasis, digestive issues, acne, rosacea, hormonal imbalances and food intolerances. You name it…. I have got it !!
All of these intolerances and imbalances if not managed properly end up presenting on my skin in one way or another. Inflammation, redness, reactive itchy spots or acne breakouts.
Prior to owning my own clinic I worked in the corporate world in business development, I spent alot of money hunting for the right therapist and the right products to help my skin. I can tell you now it was really hard to find the right mix for my skin. It wasnt until I started working with my own clients that I realised that intolerances were more common than I thought and they almost always have a negative presence on the skin.
This is when I started blending products for myself. By using myself as a guinea pig and after a whole lot of advanced dermal research – I started to work out what helped to reduce flare-ups for both my eczema and my rosacea. I then worked out how to reduce the acneaic component to rosacea and tested my products on my clients. For the last 5 years I have worked successfully with many clients to rebalance their skin problems
The beauty therapy industry has changed a lot since I trained ( dare I say it … in the late 1980’s ! ). A beauty therapist in those days was taught everything from skin anatomy to full body physiology including weight management, nutrition and dietary recommendations and I also came away with a certificate as an aerobics instructor. ( now Im giving my age away ! )
I have also travelled extensively overseas to gain more knowledge in these areas including cosmetic chemistry, advanced corneotherapy and together with my ” past life ” in veterinary pharmaceuticals I seem to have ended up with this unique set of skills in cellular biology, skin care and nutrition.
I mention nutrition as this is my passion.
The skin care line at The Still Room is based on aiding the skin with topical nutrients in unique compositions ( its kind of this amazing alchemy of botanicals which I find really cool ). These products work brilliantly at bringing the skin back into a state of balance. Its kind of a quick fix.
If I look at my body as a whole though, I see that what I put into it is another ball game entirely. This is why I am interested in permaculture and nutrient dense gardening practices. More and more you will see us promoting a holistic way of life as I personally believe that if we all look after our backyards then the planet will slowly be regenerated back into a healthier state. More importantly, WE will be regenerated back into a healthier state.
Our bodies are telling us that we are not healthy, the food intolerances are telling us that what we are eating is not right. After much research, I have come to the conclusion that our soils are nutrient deficient so if we take the time to enrich our soils and feed ourselves well, then we are providing our bodies with the essential chemical nutrients that it needs to bring us back into a state of balance. If we are healthier then our planet is healthier.
Our mantra is healthy planet = healthy body = glowing skin. We are trying in all aspects of The Still Room to ensure that we are supporting the planet as best as we can. This includes our packaging, which at best can be reused around the house or at worst can be recycled reasonably efficiently. We would prefer you reuse our tins ( you can also bring them back to us at the caravan for a discount ) as opposed to recycle them as most of our recycling is now done off shore.
Ultimately our aim is not to dominate, nor to conquer the skincare world. We are here simply to support you in your own trials with food intolerances, provide you with information and hopefully inspire you to nurture your own backyard ( remember change starts with us ! ) and hopefully support us by purchasing our skin care products so we can continue to spread the word xx
