Antioxidants can help your resolve your skin problems.
As Skin therapists products with high levels of good quality antioxidants are our go to.
The reason for this is antioxidants are the BEST for stabilising skin conditions. Especially, sensitive ones.
But what is an antioxidant, how do they work and why are they important ?
To explain an antioxidant we first need to look at the definition of oxidation.
The dictionary will explain the term as something like this …..
“A reaction in which the atoms of an element lose electrons and the valence of the element is correspondingly increased.” www.freedictionary.com
Not something you think to read about when looking at the skin right ?
I like to explain it to clients like this, think of a time when your skin went a bit haywire. A plane trip will usually do it or maybe you’re in some extreme weather. What happens ? 9 times out of 10 the skin will suddenly feel quite dry or tight, it might go a little red or feel a bit irritated. An advanced skin therapist will identify that the skin as going through what is called oxidation. Or oxidative stress. This can also happen when you eat something that your body doesn’t like.
Take the plane ride. The skin is exposed to some extreme externals that it wouldn’t normally be exposed to as a result the skin goes a bit bananas as the oxidative stress creates free radicals.
Oxidation is a naturally occurring process and when it happens to the skin, if not stabilised or addressed, the free radicals kind of ” bang around ” and cause damage such as premature ageing, inflammation, or irritation. Overexposure to UV light also creates oxidative stress to the skin.
This is why the industry values topical antioxidants. The most popular form of antioxidant is Vitamin C. Hence the reason why we see so many Vitamin C serums on the market. Be careful which forms of Vitamin C you use though. ( see our blog on Vitamin C – what to watch out for )
We use Vitamin C in our Rose Oil together with Co-Enzyme Q 10 both of which are excellent at stabilising the skin when it goes ” bananas” and rejuvenating for damaged skin that has been neglected.
We also use Goji Berry and Acai Berry in our Herbal Alchemy formulas as natural stabilisers for skins that are in need of some love. Both are high in antioxidants and also feed the skin cells natural structure to provide support when its under assault.
If you are travelling, have sun damage, been in a dry climate or have sensitive skin then ask us which formula is best for you to help your skin stabilise. You can email us or PM us for any help x
